Section J Compliance
The National Construction Code (NCC) requires that new commercial buildings meet minimum energy efficiency requirements under Section J “Energy Efficiency” provisions.
Building surveyors and authorities require energy efficiency performance assessment reports to be prepared, demonstrating compliance to the NCC.
Two pathways to achieving compliance are: The Deemed to Satisfy (DtS) pathway and the J1V3 pathway. The DtS pathway is a prescriptive checklist. Individual parts of the building — walls, floors and ceiling insulation, glazing, air conditioning and ventilation and lighting—must meet a specific minimum requirement.
The J1V3 performance-based pathway uses advanced thermal modelling to prove that a proposed building’s annual greenhouse gas emissions and comfort levels are equal to or better than a compliant “reference building”. This pathway provides flexibility to achieve Section J compliance without strictly adhering to the prescribed minimum requirements, which allows design flexibility, cost-effective construction and reduced operating costs.
Our expert team understands the provisions of NCC 2022 and 2025 Section J and will work with your commercial designer to prepare a report that demonstrates compliance to obtain a building permit.
